United Kingdom-5000 additional staff at HM Revenue and Customs to prepare for Brexit

The U.K. government has announced plans to recruit up to 5,000 additional staff at HM Revenue and Customs to prepare for Brexit.

Most of these new workers would be needed to design and implement new customs rules and movement across borders of goods. Already, 3,000 new posts have been created to support the “EU exit across government.” HM Treasury has already committed 500 million euros to Brexit preparations, much of which covers preparations for implementing changes at the border, and converting existing EU law into domestic law. Even so, senior HMRC officials have warned the government that it might be five years or longer before all the changes necessary to check and tax imports to the UK are implemented. The government will need to orchestrate change across more than 30 government departments and public bodies, as well as over 100 local authority organizations.
